Whether you’re a homeowner or a builder, interior design and renovation of a home is a very exciting process! Regardless of your budget, choosing where to spend your money to ensure that it will give you the best bang for your buck can be overwhelming.
Trends come and go, and you want your investment to last, not look outdated in a few short years.
Some renovations are expensive, and other minor interior design changes can make a huge difference without busting your wallet.
In this article we will help you decipher which choices will help you be on trend for 2020 and make the most efficient use of your hard-earned cash.
Last year we saw a lot of folks go with open shelving. While beautiful in concept, ultimately we designed kitchen cabinets to protect and hide the clutter, and open shelving misses the mark.
In 2020 you can expect to see much of the “Euro-style cabinetry“. These cabinets are constructed from high end laminate, and boast a sleek and frameless style.
They have been widely available and popular in Europe for years, and have made their way to the US and become available over the last year or two.
Typically you will see them in wood or a solid colour, and hardware on the cabinetry itself is minimal.
Kitchen renovations have the highest return on investment in comparison to other aesthetic changes, and this trend will be long-lasting and withstand the test of time.
Euro-style cabinetry fits with most styles ranging from modern interior designs to traditional kitchens, and will keep you on point for 2020 and adapt along with the trends in future years without having to fully renovate again.
If you’re looking for the least expensive and permanent change with the most dramatic effect, look no farther than the paint section. Painting a room is very affordable, especially if you can do it yourself.
It doesn’t take as much time as many other renovations, it’s easily covered with a new choice, and can make or break a room when you walk in. Paint choice sets the tone for the entire room.
2019 followed a very grey trend. A lot of white was also used. It should be no surprise that for 2020 we’re swinging the opposite way, and choosing to accent with dark colours. We still love matte paints.
Black is one of the top colours for 2020. Kitchen cabinets painted black are able to endure the tough wear and tear on a kitchen, without showing every greasy fingerprint. If all black cabinets would overwhelm the space, 2020 is seeing a lot of wood tones on top with black underneath.
Two toned cabinetry is very much on trend. Walls painted black are great for having a “chalkboard” as well as providing a clean sophisticated accent wall to make lighter items pop against the deep tone.
2020 is also all about blue! Pantone’s Color of the year is called Classic Blue. It’s uplifting, clean and elegant, and is easy to match with other colours in your home. From the brighter classic blue to deep navy tones, blue is definitely on trend for the year.
Use of tranquil colours like light green or even pink are coming back, especially with the way the tones work with black and navy blue. When choosing a pink, shoot for a soft or blush tone and use, to avoid looking like a Barbie Dream House.
Fear of patterns is a thing of the past. Past years have trended for a clean and muted look, but this year look for animal prints and textures, and even mismatching colours. Minimalism has turned more to maximalism when it comes to colour in the home.
Animal prints have been big in fashion, but this year look to incorporate them in your house too.
Typically a minor and replaceable interior design change you can get your feet wet to the idea with a blanket or pillow accent, or dive in with animal print rug or chair, or even a large wall art to give the place a lively feel.
Textures of home builder materials and patterns of last year were more clean and smooth, but in 2020 folks are looking to step it up a notch.
Using a vivid pattern or texture in a small space can highlight all the extra little features and areas of your home that often go unnoticed. Velvet furniture with smooth edges is trending hard in 2020.
While 2020 is lending to a lot of colour and pattern, we still haven’t let go of minimalism. We’ve seen hidden refrigerators and pantries, but this year there is something new!
It’s actually possible to conceal your entire kitchen, with lines so clean you can barely tell it has anything in it, and it’s one of the biggest growing design trends!
With living spaces getting smaller and use of tiny homes and other sustainable trends, these smaller spaces look even smaller when they are cluttered. A home builder or contractor can design your home to hide everything, even the kitchen sink and stove.
Upgrading the doors and windows of your home not only can change the look, but can also improve energy efficiency of your home.
While not a cheap renovation, it pays off in the end with the focus on ecological awareness.
Crittall-style windows and doors are on point with the industrial modern trend of 2020, and add a ton of natural light to every space.
People are getting creative, and these doors and windows are being seen as a replacement to walls, as well as used for showers and interior room division.
As our generation ages and has children, we are trending heavily toward staying in.
Bars can be crowded or expensive, but a bar set-up at home allows you a sophisticated and relaxed social situation among friends.
Whether you build your bar into the kitchen or another level of the home or want to give it a shot with a bar cart and set of cocktail chairs, you and your friends are sure to enjoy the fun vibes you can create.
As ecological awareness increases, we’re all more concerned with the products we consume, wear, or purchase and the effect it has on the environment.
To extend this to our homes, we can make the effort to purchase furniture that has been sustainably sourced. We are buying more items that are made from sustainable materials, and repurposing old furniture and items more often.
Many companies and designers are surfacing that will make donations to an organization for every chair that is purchased, or discuss the jobs their furniture making creates.
From the light fixtures to the doorknobs to the kitchen cabinets and shelving, we have metal all over our homes. While changing out all of the hardware can be a meticulous task, it’s generally not high on the difficulty scale to make a change.
Whether you’re building a new home or just ready for a change, the metal you choose makes a huge difference on the entire tone of your home.
Adding metal hardware to your cabinets where it didn’t exist can make or break an entire style you’re trying to go for. Keep an eye out in 2020 for brass. Not the shiny stuff from the 90’s, but a newer more matte brass.
It works wonderfully for mixing with other metals like silver chrome and stainless, especially if you’re just looking to add it in for an accent.
Rose gold is also entering the playing field and widely gaining in popularity over the last year. Expect to see a lot of rose gold in 2020.
With all the modern technology and advancements, we all feel like products aren’t built to last the way they used to be. From wood in the bathroom to extra nooks and crannies that can collect water and create mold problems.
The answer for some when it comes to the home is concrete. We are seeing concrete used everywhere from the kitchen to the bathroom.
Concrete is durable, and has a very clean modern industrial look that is right on point with other trends of 2020. Concrete kitchen counters are increasingly popular, and a cheaper alternative to marble and granite.
Concrete sealer and stains are available to create a variety of looks, and floors can be left or stained. We’re getting away from the cluttered look, and looking toward more clean lines and rough finishes.
Walls are often being left as exposed concrete and your wallet can’t complain about all the finishes and extra things you skipped purchasing. In this case, less is more.
When it comes to flooring, 2020 is about durability. Terrazzo, tile, wood-lookalikes, and hardwood floors are popular. We are seeing a lot more use of area rugs over hard floors. There really is no wrong choice here, unless it’s carpeting. 🙂
